NLTTA Combined Clubs 10 Mile TT - 22 February 2014

The time-trial season kicked off slightly earlier than usual - Saturday 22nd Feb, but in spite of bad outdoor weather recently there was plenty of evidence of some high quality training having been done, and some serious effort being put into placing an early marker down.

The North Lancs and Lakes Time Trial Association (NLTTA) planned for a season-opening 10-miler. Unfortunately, because of roadworks this was shortened to a 6 miler. Southport's Karl Turner and Rob Hurst decided it wasn't quite worth the bother for a race this short. However, the remaining veterans entered from Southport put their wheels to the start line and gave it a go. The course, with a peculiar U-turn start from a side road onto the A6 near Kirkland Bridge had a wind-assisted kick off for just 500m before turning westwards for St Michaels-on-Wyre and into a head/cross wind. Then some sketchy, twisting roads towards the finish outside Myerscough College, which for me came about rather too suddenly.

Scores on the doors - first home for Southport was Eddie Marshall 15:03, followed by Greg Rycroft 15:20 (these two are lining up for a close season over the short distances), Ian Bailey trying a full aero-bike for the first time 16:13, Richard Cary (probably the only rider in the event on fixed wheel) 17:12, and our very own Margaret Biggs, whose new foot attachment wasn't quite set in the right place, with 19:55.

A very full field of over 130 riders, and given that the wind was rising for the later starters (us) the Southport squad performed most respectably - perhaps 3rd team or thereabouts. Click here for a full results list
